The Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) is a movement within the Roman Catholic Church that has grown dramatically in many parts of the world over the past three decades, including Sub-Saharan Africa. This survey's aim is to establish the relationship between the CCR and civic engagement in Kenya and Nigeria. This data file focuses on Kenya. The questionnaires had items relating to religious behavior and beliefs and political attitudes and behaviors. The Nigeria file can also be found on the ARDA.
This survey was administered face-to-face using PAPI (pen and paper interview) methodology with printed and structured questionnaires. The survey was carried out using three separate questionnaires, in English with Kiswahili translation, for the three target groups: charismatic Catholics, non-charismatic Catholics, and Pentecostals.
Sampling Procedures
Survey recruitment was done primarily through snowball sampling to facilitate recruitment of potentially difficult to reach respondents, such as charismatic Catholics. The researchers preselected sampling locations and parishes and provided them to Synovate Kenya, the organization that administered the survey. A total of 200 interviews were conducted in each identified parish.
