Summary

In this March 2005 ABC News/Washington Post poll, a random national sample of 1,001 Americans was asked to discuss their attitudes and opinions regarding the Bush Administration, Social Security, the situation in Iraq, countries posing a potential threat to the United States, terrorism, credit card fraud, Pope John Paul the Second, and Terri Schiavo. Demographic variables include: gender, age, race, education, and income.

The ARDA has added five additional variables to the original data set to enhance the users' experience on our site.

Collection Procedures

This survey was conducted by TNS Intersearch of Horsham, PA for ABC News and The Washington Post. Telephone interviews were done with a random national sample of 1,001 adults.

Sampling Procedures

As described on the Methodology page of the ABC News website, "A sample of households in the continental United States is selected via random digit dialing (RDD) procedures, to ensure that all possible listed and unlisted phone numbers are included with equal probability of selection.

"Sampling then occurs in three stages. First, a systematic random sample of telephone exchanges is selected within each stratum, by taking every nth exchange... Next, telephone banks (the first two digits of the four-digit suffix) with more than one residential listing assigned in white-pages directories are classified as working banks... The third stage of sampling is respondent selection within the household, accomplished by last-birthday selection. Interviewers ask to speak to the household member age 18 or over at home who's had the last birthday..."

According to the Methodology page of the ABC News Web site, "Final data are weighted using demographic information from the Census to adjust for sampling and nonsampling deviations from population values. Respondents customarily are classified into one of 48 cells based on age, race, sex and education. Weights are assigned so the proportion in each of these 48 cells matches the actual population proportion according to the Census Bureau's most recent Current Population Survey."

Note on variables RELIGION, RELIG_2, CHRISTN, and PROTESTA:

Notice that the variable RELIGION has categories 21 (Christian Protestant), 22 (Christian Non-Protestant), and 23 (Other Non-Christian). These three categories are based entirely on respondents' answers to questions later in the survey such as RELIG_2, CHRISTN, and PROTESTA. Respondents were automatically coded as 21 "Christian (Protestant)" if they responded 1 "Yes" to PROTESTA. Respondents were automatically coded 22 "Christian (Non-Protestant)" if they answered 2 "No" or 8 "DK/No opinion" to PROTESTA, or if they responded any of the following values for RELIG_2: 8 "Jehovah's Witness" or 15 "Orthodox (Any Mention)." Respondents were automatically coded 23 "Other Non-Christian" if they responded any of the following values for RELIG_2: 2, 6, 12, 13, 16, 20, or 21 OR if they responded 2 "No" or 8 "DK/No opinion" for CHRISTN. Respondents were automatically coded 12 "Protestant" for RELIGION if they responded any of the following for RELIG_2: 3 "Church of Christ", 4 "Church of God," or 18 "Seventh Day Adventist".
