Summary

The purpose of the project was to produce a social and religious profile of American Catholicism. This was accomplished by use of a national telephone survey of Catholics at least 18 years of age. Respondents were asked questions concerning their religious upbringing, life course experiences and personal faith and morals. The survey was conducted by Response Analysis, a professional polling company in New Jersey.

The ARDA has added six additional variables to the original data set to enhance the users' experience on our site.

Telephone interview surveys

Sampling Procedures

County-level estimates were used in conjunction with data from the U.S. Census and information on the estimated distribution of working residential telephone numbers across exchanges to develop a stratification of all telephone exchanges serving the continental U.S. A secondary stratification of exchanges within certain strata was overlaid on the base stratification in an attempt to increase the chances of finding Black and Hispanic households.

Using a disproportionate allocation sampling model, exchanges serving areas with higher concentrations of Catholic households were oversampled, while exchanges serving areas with lower concentrations of Catholics were undersampled. Within the designated area codes and exchanges, telephone numbers were randomly generated using a random digit dialing (RDD) sampling procedure.
