Description: The Berkeley Zen Center originated in the Zen Center of San Francisco under the leadership of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi. However, after Suzuki Roshi's death, the organization became independent under Sojun Mel Weitsman, who was Suzuki Roshi's student, with a new emphasis on lay practice. In 1979, the center moved to its present location that is home to a small residential community of priests, lay students, and children.
