Description: Mata Amritanandamayi, also known as Amma (or Mother) throughout the world for her love and compassion toward all beings, is an Indian spiritual teacher. Her influence in India grew in the 1970s, and since 1988 she has built a number of temples in which four deities are installed to represent the principle of the "Unity of God." Amma made her first trip to the West in 1987, and the Mata Amritanandamayi Center was established in that year as an outrowth of her worldwide ministry. Humanitarian efforts and caring for the needy are also central parts of her work.
