Description: The New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) of Tibetan Buddhism was developed in the west in the mid-1970s by Ven. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. The Kadampa Tradition is traced back to Atisha (982-1054 CE), who brought Buddhism to Tibet from India, and who emphasized guru devotion and the need for a monastic disciple. The New Kadampa Tradition was created to present the old teachings in a way that appeals to, and connects with, modern Westerners. Today, is it a branch of the Gelugpa Tibetan Buddhist School.
