Old Regular Baptists (1825 - Present) - Religious Group

Religious Family: Baptist
Religious Tradition: Evangelical Protestant
Description: Old Regular Baptists date back to the aftermath of the Great Awakening, when there was disagreement among Baptists about "old" and "new" doctrinal standards. The new doctrine leaned toward Calvinism, so use of the word "Regular" indicated that a group identified with the older doctrine. Many Baptists in the older tradition came together as "United" Baptists, with the New Salem Association of United Baptists being organized in 1825. In 1854, the word "Regular" replaced "United" in the name, and in 1892, "Old" was added before "Regular." Most of the modern day Old Regular Baptist groups can be traced back to this original group. Today, there are about 16 associations, 300 churches, and 10,000 members in the denomination.
