Shambhala International (1973 - Present) - Religious Group

Religious Family: Buddhism
Religious Tradition: Buddhism
Description: Shambhala International was founded by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a Tibetan teacher of the Kagyu lineage, who fled Tibet in 1959 and came to North America in 1970. Chogyam Trungpa claimed to share pre-Buddhist teachings (Shambhala); these teachings outlined a way of warriorship to enable fearless and direct living. The group was originally known as Vajradhatu, but after Chogyam Trungpa's death in 1987, his son succeeded him and later changed the group’s name to Shambhala International.
