Description: Aurobindo Centers exist mostly independently in the United States, following the teachings of Sri Aurobindo Ghose (1872-1950). Aurobindo was a literary figure and political activist in India. While in jail on sedition charges, he focused his attention on the Hindu scriptures and yoga, soon afterward having a vision of Krishna (the Hindu deity) that prompted him to dedicate his life to spiritual practice. Aurobindo taught "integral yoga," which is based in part on Vedanta and tantra, and works primarily by descent of the shakti into the mind. The Sri Aurobindo Society operates in India, but has an international arm to serve centers outside the country. The are a number of centers in the U.S., with the earliest one being founded in 1951.
