Wesley's A Collection of Hymns, for Use of the People Called Methodists - Timeline Event

Time Period

1780

Description

John Wesley’s A Collection of Hymns, for Use of the People called Methodists (1780) became the definitive hymnbook for Methodists. Wesley had compiled his first hymnbook in 1737 (Collection of Psalms and Hymns while in the colony of Georgia, but desired an improved hymnbook for Methodists that was "not too large, that it may be cheap and portable; nor too small, that it may contain a sufficient variety for all ordinary occasions." It contained 560 hymns when first published in 1780 and an additional 209 hymns were added in 1830. It includes popular hymns, like "O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing" and "Come, Sinners, to the Gospel Feast."
