The Third Great Awakening - Timeline Movement

Time Period

1857 - 1920

Description

The Third Great Awakening, according to historians, occurred from approximately the late 1850s to the early 1920s. Much like the First and Second Great Awakenings, this time period experienced a resurgence in religious interest and vigor. The "Great Prayer Meeting Revival of 1857-58" was the catalyst and carried into the 1870s, as Dwight Moody’s urban campaigns spread across the United States.

At the beginning of the 20th century, this third awakening was marked by the rise of the Holiness and Pentecostal movements, along with the popularity of Billy Sunday’s sermons drawing in large crowds.

Similar to previous awakenings, the Third Great Awakening helped reinvigorate religious education through the founding of various bible colleges and seminaries, including the Moody Bible Institute, Bob Jones College, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
