Bakker, Tammy Faye - Timeline Biography

Time Period

03-07-1942 - 07-20-2007

Description

Televangelists Tammy Faye Bakker (1942-2007) and husband Jim Bakker gained popularity in the 1960s as hosts of "The 700 Club" for Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network.

In 1974, the Bakkers founded their own network, Praise the Lord. Their "Jim and Tammy Show," featuring the charismatic Tammy Faye with her trademark lavish makeup, reached 13 million households at its peak. Their multi-million-dollar empire included a 2,300-acre theme park and resort in Fort Mill, S.C., Heritage USA.

The unraveling began in 1987, after news emerged of Jim Bakker’s affair with a church secretary. Two years later, he was sent to prison for fraud, and it was estimated that he stole $158 million from aspiring investors.

The couple divorced in 1992 and Tammy Faye later married Roe Messner. She remained in the spotlight with books and TV appearances, including a reality show. In 2000, she was featured in a critically acclaimed documentary, "The Eyes of Tammy Faye."
