McPherson, Aimee Semple - Timeline Biography

Time Period

10-19-1890 - 09-27-1944

Description

In 1910, Aimee Semple McPherson (1890-1944) traveled with her husband to China, where they served as missionaries. After he died of malaria, she returned to America and began conducting revivals around the country.

She was a dynamic speaker and faith-healer. Despite resistance from male clergy, she drew enthusiastic crowds -- and media coverage.

In 1923, McPherson opened the giant Angelus Temple in Los Angeles, one of America’s first megachurches, where she held flamboyant worship services that were beamed around Southern California via the church’s radio tower, KFSG, the first radio station owned and run by a woman.

She also began training preachers for new branches and in 1927, McPherson incorporated the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, a Pentecostal denomination. That same year, she commissioned her first foreign missionaries.

She fed the hungry during the Depression, sold war bonds in World War II and led the denomination until her death.

The Foursquare Church currently has 66,000 congregations in 140 countries.
