Description
In the late 19th century, Bosnian Muslims began immigrating to Chicago to help dig subway tunnels and work on other construction projects (recruited, in part, by a large Bosnian-own construction company in the city). By May 1, 1906, the Bosnian Muslims started an organization they named Dzemijetul Hajrije (The Benevolent Society), which provided religious services in local coffee houses as well as helped with medical and funeral expenses for their community.
As the population grew, the society branched out with its own buildings, offering religious services, Islamic education for children and cultural centers.
Dzemijetal Hajrije remains an active force in Chicago and the oldest existing Muslim organization in the United States.
