Autobiography of a Yogi Published - Timeline Event

Founder

Paramahansa Yogananda

Time Period

1946

Description

Paramahansa Yogananda incorporated his Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF), headquartered in Los Angeles, in 1935. SRF encompasses a blending of religious traditions -- from Hinduism, which Yogananda studied extensively in his native India, to western religious practices that he encountered after he first came to America in 1924. His teachings focus on how to achieve bliss through self-realization.

In 1946, Yogananda, a popular and prolific lecturer, published his Autobiography of a Yogi, which talks about his lifetime exploration of world religions, their teachings and his own conclusions. The book has become a spiritual classic and is still in print. It is read at SRF gatherings (along with other sacred texts, from the Bible to the Bhagavad Vita). And it’s used as a textbook and reference work in universities.

SRF counts more than 500 temples, retreats, ashrams, and meditation centers around the world.
