Description
Missionary Elisabeth Elliot (1926-2015) was serving in the Ecuador jungle when, on Jan. 8, 1956, her husband and three other missionaries were killed by Waorani tribespeople. Her powerful, best-selling book about their martyrdom and their faith, Through Gates of Splendor, was published in 1957.
The book inspired evangelicals around the world, becoming a classic still read today. In turn, Elliot became one of the most influential evangelical women of the 20th century.
In 2006, Christianity Today magazine listed Through Gates of Splendor as one of the top 10 books that had shaped evangelicals over the past 50 years. Among its most quoted lines, "Leave it all in the hands that were wounded for you."
Elliot continued to work as a missionary in Ecuador until 1963, when she returned to the U.S. Elliot wrote many books, was a popular speaker and hosted a daily radio program. She also taught at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
