Formation of the Alliance of Baptists - Timeline Event

Time Period

02-12-1987

Description

After the continued success of the conservative resurgence in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), which began in 1979 with the election of Adrian Rogers, Baptist liberals sought to form an organization that would counter conservative influence from within the SBC. Meeting at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1987, they formed the Southern Baptist Alliance. In 1992, despairing of the conflict, the organization changed its name to the Alliance of Baptists and formally severed ties with the SBC.

By the mid-1990s the Alliance had grown into a fellowship of approximately 130 churches with 65,000 members. Today it is a member of the National and World Councils of Churches. During the 2000s, the Alliance adopted an inclusive stance toward homosexuals and, in 2014, it joined a lawsuit challenging North Carolina's ban on same-sex marriage.
