The publication of Left Behind in 1995 highlighted the growing interest in the end times among conservative Protestants. The novel centers around characters who were left behind after the Rapture. It was the first in a series of 16 best-selling novels by Tim LaHaye and Christian writer Jerry Jenkins. More than 70 million copies were sold, along with a marketplace of related products, including T-shirts, movies, and a Bible study series. The Left Behind series remains one of the best-selling works of Christian fiction in the United States.
