Church of God (Cleveland, TN) - Timeline Event

Founder

Richard G. Spurling

Time Period

08-19-1886

Description

In 1886, Richard Spurling called together seven other Tennessee Baptists with hopes of restoring primitive Christianity and reviving the spiritual fervor of churches. This holiness revival led to the formation of the Christian Union, which later changed its name to the Church of God in 1907 after moving to Cleveland, Tennessee following a merger with a group in North Carolina. The Church of God is known for its acceptance of faith healing and the spontaneous speaking in tongues (i.e., glossolalia). It is the oldest Pentecostal denomination in the United States.
