Keller, Timothy - Timeline Biography

Time Period

09-23-1950

Description

Timothy Keller is a theologian and pastor at the Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, which he founded in 1989. Although it started with only 75 members, it swelled to approximately 5,000 members by the early 2000s.

His success as a pastor comes from his cultural and intellectual awareness that New Yorkers enjoy. Fearing the anti-intellectualism he sees in some Christian circles, he quotes New Yorker and Nietzsche in his sermons. Moreover, his New York parishioners resonate with his discussions of financial greed and obsessing with success. Though he is an evangelist in the literal sense, his ability to critique both conservatives and liberals appeals to his urban Christian audience, many of whom are educated young professionals.

Keller is also known for his writing. Of his numerous books, he is best known for his New York Times bestselling book entitled The Reason for God (2008), which defends Christian belief in the modern world.
