Description
Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) was a Hindu monk and disciple of the modern Hindu saint Sri Ramakrishnna in Calcutta, India. After embarking on a world speaking tour, he received an enthusiastic reception at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893, and followed up with a national speaking tour. His theme was the harmony of the world’s religions.
In 1894, as interest in his teachings grew, Swami Vivekananda opened the Vedanta Society of New York, followed by centers in Boston and San Francisco. In 1897, he returned to India and received a hero’s welcome, extolling India’s spiritual heritage and preaching against the caste system and the subjugation of women.
Swami Vivekananda continued to help found Vedanta societies, visiting America again in 1899. While never large in number of adherents, these groups were influential in shaping the popularity of Hindu spirituality and yoga, especially among intellectuals and liberal Christians.
