Mouw, Richard - Timeline Biography

Time Period

04-22-1940

Description

Richard Mouw is a Presbyterian evangelical, who served as a leading "public intellectual" among evangelicals throughout his career. He studied at Western Theological Seminary and worked as a philosophy professor for 17 years at Calvin College. He later became president of Fuller Theological Seminary in 1993, a position he held until he retired in 2013.

During his time as president of Fuller Seminary, he became well known for his efforts toward interfaith dialogue. In 2004, Mouw spoke to Mormons at the Salt Lake Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, Utah. In his speech, he apologized to Mormons on behalf of evangelicals for how Mormons had been treated. While it garnered respect from Mormons, he received hate mail from evangelicals. He also has engaged in interfaith dialogue with Catholics.
