Hutchinson, Anne - Timeline Biography

Time Period

07-20-1591 - 08-20-1643

Description

Anne Hutchinson, born in England, moved to the Masschusetts Bay Colony with her merchant husband in 1634. She had received an extensive education in England at the behest of her father, Francis Marbury, and was mentored by the Puritan divine John Cotton in Massachusetts. Hutchinson was a charismatic person, and when she began holding private religious meetings in her home, a large group of men and women attended.

Hutchinson claimed to receive special revelation from God and contradicted the traditional Puritan view of sanctification, both beliefs that drew ill attention from colonial authorities, who were already concerned about her exercising authority over her male followers. She was excommunicated in 1637 and banished from the colony the following year, spending the following six years in Rhode Island and on Long Island, where she died in an Indian raid.
