Allen, Horace Newton - Timeline Biography

Time Period

04-23-1858 - 12-11-1932

Description

Horace Newtown Allen was a physician from Ohio, who was initially sent to China by the Northern Presbyterian Church’s Board of Foreign Missions in 1883. Unhappy in China, his medical friends advised him to go to Korea, which he did on September 15, 1884. Not long after, Prince Min Young Ik was stabbed during a failed uprising. Under Allen’s medical supervision, Min Young Ik recovered in three months. This left a favorable impression of Allen on the royal family. In time, Allen helped in removing anti-Christian policies that had previously limited Christian evangelism and Western businesses in Korea.

He also served as a diplomat. In 1903, he urged President Theodore Roosevelt to side with Korea over Japan, Korea’s enemy. His efforts were futile and Allen was recalled to the United States in 1905, perhaps owing to his strong pro-Korean stance.

Nonetheless, Allen’s close ties to Korea helped bridge the cultural and political divide between the U.S. and Korea.
