Description
Daniel Alexander Payne (1811-1893) was born to free parents in Charleston, S.C. Having attended a Lutheran seminary (Gettysburg Theological Seminary, Penn.) and leading a Presbyterian Church (Liberty Street Presbyterian Church, Troy, N.Y.), he finally returned to his denomination of origin, African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), in 1841.
After serving as a minister, he became an AME bishop in 1852. Considered the second most important AME bishop only to founder Richard Allen, Payne served as a delegate for the first Methodist ecumenical conference in 1881 and participated in the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893.
Payne strongly advocated an educated ministry and literacy for African Americans. In 1863, he purchased Wilberforce University in Ohio on behalf of AME, an institution founded in 1856 to educate blacks. He served as the university’s president from 1863-1876, the first African American president of any college in the United States.
