Thomas Dexter "T.D." Jakes (1957-present) began his ministry in 1982 with a small independent Pentecostal church in Montgomery, W.V. His church grew and moved locations several times before he reached fame in 1993. That year, he self-published his book Woman, Thou Art Loosed, which is based on the spiritual needs of abandoned and abused women he had encountered in his church. It became a national bestseller, selling more than 800,000 copies. Also in 1993, he began a television ministry called Get Ready, which continues to air on Black Entertainment Television and Trinity Broadcasting Network.
In 1996, he moved his ministry to Dallas, where he founded The Potter House, a nondenominational megachurch that attracts 17,000 members each service. It was the 20th largest church in the country in 2013.
As a popular evangelical who can attract large audiences, many consider T.D. Jakes a modern-day Billy Graham.
