Tekakwitha, Kateri - Timeline Biography

Time Period

1656 - 1680

Description

Kateri Tekakwitha was born in 1656 in the Mohawk Territory to an Iroquois chief father and an Algonquian Christian mother. According to religion historians Edwin Gaustad and Leigh Schmidt, the place of her birth was "probably in the very village where Isaac Jogues met his death." After being instructed in the Catholic faith by Jesuit missionaries and other Native Americans who already were Catholics, she was baptized into the church in 1676.

Although she never took formal religious vows, Tekakwitha lived in a French mission convent in what is now Canada and became noted in her own lifetime for her asceticism. Her personal holiness and accounts of miracles after her death made Tekakwitha a subject of popular devotion in Canada and the United States. Tekakwitha was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1980 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.
